The Porsche Taycan has become a hot commodity around the world, which can be noticed in the Porsche Now sales pop-up shops that have spread across 23 countries, with more to come in the future. This model is the happy medium between going electric and driving a truly iconic sports car with the ability to travel further than the EPA estimate.
It has been recently announced by Porsche that the Taycan has shattered the record for the least amount of time spent charging, driving across the United States. From LA to NYC, the Taycan traveled 2,834.5 miles in total, with a collective charge time of just 2 hours, 26 minutes, and 48 seconds. Unbelievable, right? How can any car with less than 2.5 hours of charging make it from point A to point B over 2,800 miles?
The most influential part of this amazing feat was the type of charging used along the way. The Taycan’s had been charged with high-power 350 Kilowatt chargers, using the Electrify America CCS DC Fast Charging Network. According to the record-breaking driver Wayne Gerdes, the 350KW chargers had taken the Taycan from a low 6% charge to 82% in just 22 minutes.
Gerdes was not a rookie in this challenge, for he is the holder of a handful of records in fuel efficiency, ranging from trucks to diesel engine vehicles. He was actually the first hypermiler to achieve an average higher than 150 miles per gallon–181 mpg average in a Honda Insight to be specific. The method he has used includes various hypermiling techniques, designed to achieve numbers that are borderline unbelievable. This technical method of his was, in all probability, the very same to achieve this record with the Taycan.
Before Gerdes blew this EV World Record sky high, the record of charging to get across the country was 7 hours, 10 minutes, and 1 second. As seen above, earlier in this blog, the Taycan broke the record by almost five hours! It should go without question that this record will be sticking around for quite some time.
Now, it is important to keep in mind that people do care about miles per gallon, but typically not to the extent of Gerdes.. However, this does not mean that this new world record is insignificant by any means. With this record in place, Taycan owners can expect great success in long road trips with reduced charging times, thanks to the Electrify America DC Fast Charging network. With enough of these chargers implanted across the country and globe, Taycan and other electric car owners could spend as little time at a charger that one would at a gas station, while still achieving incredible increases in their driving range.
While this information is great to read about and learn from, one can only hope that people do not make it their life mission to achieve similar or exact results that Gerdes has. The disclaimer should be marked as an asterisk next to “Guinness World Record.”
What are your thoughts on this amazing record? Would you buy a Taycan? Why or why not?
